In Philippines. Vice president Sara duterte got impeached by the lower congress by overwhelming majority (200+ representatives voted to impeached her) her impeachment trials will begin after the election
VP sara got impeached due to
A. Threatening to kill the president and his first family
B. Misused of public funds
C. Instigating a coup et etat
D. Treason
Additionally, president bongbong marcos formally declares a political war against the duterte this election. Currently, most of the marcos lineup has a big chance of winning the congressional election. If they get the majority. They can kick sara out of the office permanently. They also have no issue with the opposition because the opposition also hated the dutertes
Gas_Station_Cheese • 835 points • 2025-02-12
I know exactly three names in regards to Filipino politics - Ferdinand Marcos, Imelda Marcos, and Rodrigo Duterte, so seeing the names Sara Duterte and Bongbong Marcos in reference to the current leadership was a bit surreal. But it was almost grimly comforting to know other countries are also stuck in their cults of personality and veneration of the familiar over progress.
DJ3nsign • 1155 points • 2025-02-12
To be fair the Dutertes kind of pissed everyone off that might be able to help them already. They brought it on themselves, not that bongbong is much better.

Ecuadorian here. We just had our presidential elections, which ended up in a tie between two of the sixteen (yes, sixteen) candidates. So we have two more months of lovely “suspense” until the next election round - yay. Also, “suspense” since imo they’re both as bad as the other but in different fun ways, so yeah.
Crime is still criming, health services aren’t working as they should, lots of unemployment and underemployment, corruption at each level of the state - y’know, the usual. But hey, at least the weather right now is nice and the land is fertile and productive, so that’s good.

Scotland - it’s February so it’s cold and grey. There’s not much going on in my part of the country so it’s somewhat peaceful
ETA: I can’t reply to everyone but I’m glad you’re all interested in Scotland! I hope you all make it here one day, you’ll receive a warm welcome. The only unwelcome people are the maga Americans because of the damage the maga leader did to our environment building his golf resort, and his general attitude to us as a people.

Once I got the dream gig of house-sitting a hostel in the Highlands in February (was closed for the month). I didn’t know anyone in town and spent the month mostly reading by the coal fire, eating toast and jam, and walking in the woods. It was absolutely wonderful.
Edit - hostel, not hotel
DementedSwan_ • 308 points • 2025-02-12
Ooh that sounds wonderful. The Highlands are so peaceful in the winter when the tourists are mostly gone. Don’t get me wrong, tourism is an essential part of our economy and tourists will always get a warm welcome (if the tourists are the respectful kind, which are most) but the stillness of the off season months is unrivaled.

Sudan is suffering from the world’s largest displacement rate, from a war driven by foreign interests (UAE). Hopefully it gets better one day so I can return home. The airport is non existent now so most people (including my family) had to flee to neighboring countries on tight busses with no AC for 48+ hrs. All this happened overnight without warning.
PopCultureReference2 • 1028 points • 2025-02-12
Hoping for safety for you and your family, and a quick return for all. My husband’s mother was trapped for months when it began. In the Netherlands, our local version of the Onion (De Speld) has sent a subpoena to the minister of Asylum and Immigration, explaining that in summary her idiotic behavior is making it difficult for readers to distinguish satire and factual reporting, and this means the government is in unlawful competition with a private enterprise.
SkgarGar • 346 points • 2025-02-12
This is hilarious to me. I’m American and lately I wonder if the Onion should do the same thing. The real stuff that is happening is genuinely more unserious and satirical than anything the Onion could make up.

Poland here. It is cold and grey but apart from that it is pretty ok … as long as you ignore media and the endless squabbling of politicians.
It’s always interesting to see polls where one question is ‘if situation in the country is bad/good/getting worse/improving’ and another is ‘is your life good/bad/getting worse/improving’. Invariably the majority of people think that the country is going to hell, but somehow the same majority thinks their lives are actually pretty good.

Part of Brazil suffering from a heat wave reaching 40° C with feel like temperatures near 70° C in some areas.
Also, coffee prices have skyrocketed last month due to severe weather impacting our crops.
Edit: It’s possible under the right conditions but unlikely to hit 70°C. As someone else pointed out the agency made a mistake and the actual feels like temperature is about 50°c.

Serbia has beautiful student protests, which may topple the dictatorship. (officially they are demanding that democratic institutions do their job, which they haven’t done in years and they refuse to negotiate with the dictator, because he has no official authority on any of the issues). So still rough, but a little hopeful after a decade of terror.

In Sweden there are rising tensions, being so close to Russia etc.
However last year they managed to take out a massive crime organisation. All the top dogs get arrested. That would be a good thing but now all the wannabe criminals are now aiming to make a name for themselves. So crime in absolutes is down but way more noticeable as people keep shooting and bombing each other.
Racism is way up, which is not great as the population is old and dying off atm.
Otherwise it is not so bad. Still beautiful nature. The people are pleasant if you put in effort to speak the language. There is definitely a sense of cohesion.
All in all, could be better, could be worse

New Zealand here, we are currently run by a moronic former ceo who has absolutely no idea what he’s doing and is regularly taken advantage of by his ministers, a man whos only goal in government is to be a king maker (tho he’s admitadly a good forigen minister when it comes to representing us on the world stage) and a Libertarian asshole who shits on Te Pāti Māori for doing a haka during during the swearing in ceremony without running it by the speaker of the house only to attempt to drive a fucking landrover up the stares of parliament without running it by anyone let alone the speaker and had to he stopped by his security who talked to him like a child who’d climbed onto some shelfs. That’s just the basics and we still got the better part of 2 years before we can toss em to the curve, because we don’t elect governments in this country, we just vote the current ones out.

I’m writing this from Italy, where we’ve officially entered the Second Medieval Age.
The roads? Cobbled. The bureaucracy? More complex than a Renaissance painting. The WiFi? Only slightly faster than a messenger pigeon from 1452.
We have politicians fighting like rival city-states, rent prices that make you consider joining a monastery, and weather that can’t decide if we’re in the Alps or the Sahara.
But don’t worry—we still have espresso, pasta, and the unwavering ability to argue about whether pineapple on pizza is a crime against humanity.
Overall, morale is high, taxes are higher, and the Vatican still hasn’t replied to my request for divine intervention.
So yeah, Italy is doing just fine!

Government seems inept but that’s usual, it is clear they are hindered by the Basics (the right wing nut job party in government who are by and large very, very stupid people).
New video from the defense forces on youtube a couple weeks ago, those are always nice. Was also great to hear of the flying claymore drone we now have.
Some foodstuffs are pretty high in price, like chocolate, but the regular stuff isn’t too expensive. Can still afford eggs.

Nearly got knocked over at Woolies while carrying my daughter by a guy stealing a bottle of coca cola and a bag of chips yesterday.
Politics: Watching our government grovel to King Cheeto in the hopes of staving off tariffs nauseating but not unexpected, even though we have a fucking trade surplus with the US which is Donnie Twoscoops bullshit metric for whether or not a country ‘deserves’ them.
But hey, never been a better time to be on an island in the middle of the ocean FAR from the US…

Germany is not doing so well
~ edit this in, so its not just about politics ~
We got an energy shortage due to the Russian war with Ukraine and shutting down Atom Energy. Coal Energy is subventionated for the past decades, but right now it is at least something.
Education, Healthsystem and Social Security is not looking good, not as bad as america, but we are far away from China or Scandinavia.
Our best industry branch are cars, but those are getting greenshamed by Ecars. We are not nearly as good as Teslas or Chinas and Ecars are still not better for the Environment than normal cars. Everyone in the industry knows that, but we are still producing inferior Ecars which are subventionated to get some green good vibes for everyone.
Left and Right are spreading more and more away from each other. Left has a lot of loud minorities shouting out ideologies, the mainstream dislikes. The bad thing is those ideologies are tied to Environment. I care about the Environment, but not about Genders or why vegan is the best way or why every prerson is perfect and should love themselves. The far right gets a lot of traction from people hating lefties, but we don’t have a good faction to vote in the right.
Public transport is a mess.
Internet and Digitalisation is far from a decent standard for a modern western industry country.

coal with about 21% is at its lowest it has been in ages, it briefly peaked in 2022 with the war in Ukraine at around 30%, but has stabilized due to pretty fast action by the (not conservative) govt.
the primary issue isnt that we dont have enough energy, we do, its that a lot of that power is unused because we dont have storage capacities and more imporantly lack a modern power line/distribution network between the north (where the coasts and offshore windfarms are) and the south (where there’s a lot of industry). Additionally that means that we cant really buy or sell a lot of power from/to Scandinavia either. (where we - as in Europe - could build storage pretty easily)
That north-south link has been targeted repeatedly by the political right, and even more by CDU/FDP libertarians/neoliberals.
Our best industry branch are cars
True, cars are about 20% of our industry, but industry is not even a third of our GDP. The biggest sector of our economy with around 70% is service. It would hurt to lose this part of our industry, but isnt as vital as the people owning the car stocks want to make you believe. We cant really compete with Chinese production anyway.
greenshamed by Ecars
Thats just nonsense, globally the market for electric vehicles has been absolutely booming, the german companies just didnt adapt fast enough and failed to establish their products. Now they’re using propaganda and lobbying to force everyone else to bail them out.
Ecars are still not better for the Environment than normal cars. Everyone in the industry knows that.
Left and Right are spreading more and more away from each other.
they are, because the right is going further and further right, the left has been remarkably consistent in their policies. Most parties have moved to the right too. The CDU is further right, the FDP is further right, the SPD effectively a centrist party now, the greens are center-left at best.
Education, Healthsystem and Social Security is not looking good (…)Public transport is a mess(…)Internet and Digitalisation is far from a decent standard for a modern western industry country.
maybe because we voted the same corrupt, conservative and libertarian/neoliberal idiots into power for most of the time since the reunification, hell most of the time since the liberation from the Nazis.
They have sold our infrastructure and lined their pockets when they privatized the DB, they lined their pockets when they privatized the Bundespost, they’ve been stripping the nation fucking blank. FOR DECADES.
But now a somewhat left-ish party(the greens) was in power for a few years, one that isnt blatantly corrupt like the CDU, FDP, AfD/BSW or SPD. and every single thing that happened in the last 3ish years(and beyond) is supposedly their fault?
Are you really this naive to continue to believe the lies of the right and the neoliberals? How many times do they have to sell your things, until you get it? How many times do they have to lie to you and say that some trans person or asylum seeker is at fault while they rob you blind? How many times do they have to lower taxes for their friends while increasing yours?
And finally, you may not care about genders and vegans or whatever, or why every prerson is “perfect”(they arent, they are equal under the law however). But, assuming you are german, you should take a long look at the first three articles of our constituion and THINK about them.
I am just so fucking tired of this…

This is so well said. The recent government had to face multiple crises while inheriting an infrastructure that was left behind from the previous coalitions. They paved the way for some progression but ultimately didn’t have enough money and support from all coalition partners to go through with all of it.
Sadly now people are only blaming the recent coalition on everything and as it looks like want to go back to the government which caused the lack of investments and progressive deals in the first place. Meanwhile the right is gaining more supporters from extremists and voters who think they can get easy solutions.

You seem like a kind soul with good intentions, but I’d urge you to look into what the left (die Linke) is actually trying to achieve instead of just buying the right wing narrative that its all about gender and veganism. Its mostly about economic redistribution. Yeah they call themselves Genossen, but don’t be scared because of that.
I’m only saying this because your response reads as center right with environmental tendencies and being annoyed about left culture war positions (understandably).

the other day I was talking with a few of my friends (all tend to lean left on the political scale) and they were all talking about how America is in the shitter and the common talking point about moving to another country came up. We all talked about which country we ought to move to before quickly realizing that just about every other country in the world is facing its own set of fucked up issues. The US may be getting the most coverage at the moment but the entire world is sort of in a state of major change.

In Ireland. The cost of housing is a huge issue but other than that things are pretty peaceful and prosperous. The economy is running a huge surplus so money is being invested in infrastructure and progress however limitations in the availability of workers among other reasons are stifling progress and meaning the housing issue isn’t improving currently. Public transport is rather poor. But other than that life is pretty peaceful. Our politicians, while I don’t agree with many of them, at least appear to have the interests of the public in mind.

- Trump becoming president instead of inmate, and all the consequences of that.
- Putin’s war in Ukraine.
- The rise of more extreme right parties in Europe.
- Our weak currency, high inflation and interest rates.

In England Oxford University had a huge break through this week in quantum teleportation, this is a huge step towards a Quantum Internet. I wont go into the nitty gritty details but a big issue with quantum computing has been scalability.
Basically this allows us to link multiple quantum processors together into a single fully connected system, so you could have two quantum computers in seperate data centers connected so effectively they have a shared CPU.
In 10-15 years time we could effectively have thousands of quantum super computers all connected into a giant Quantum computing network that people can use.
I cannot begin to describe how much Quantum Computing will change computing, but its the difference from moving to an abacus to a iPhone in terms of advancement. Don’t expect to get Quantum computers in your home anytime soon, they will be used exclusively for expensive computing tasks which are impossible right now, any mathematical problem we ever have will be able to be solved in microseconds instead of billions of years.
If your curious why that is a big deal I’d reccomend listening to Michio Kaku here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQviI1d_hFA

There are no separate countries anymore. We are one world and what happens here, or there, affects everyone there, or here. We are billions, together standing on a common ground that has no borders. It is the struggle to survive this life, day to day. Billions struggle so a few hundred can hoard dynastic wealth so great they couldn’t spend it all in 50 lifetimes. Humanity has failed.

Students in Serbia have been protesting since late 2024, and the movement keeps growing. It all started with a tragedy—part of Novi Sad’s railway station collapsed, killing 15 people. When the government’s response felt sketchy, students took to the streets, demanding transparency and accountability.
What began as outrage over one disaster turned into a massive anti-corruption movement. Now, students across 200+ cities are calling for justice, better education funding, and dropping charges against arrested activists. The protests have even earned them a nomination for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
It’s not just about one incident anymore—it’s about fighting a system people feel has been failing them for years.

Sorry in advance, eh. I started ranting.
Canadian here. Things are fiiiinne. It’s -30⁰C right now, but it’s a dry cold.
Everyone seems a little on edge because of the americans, but folks are showing their pride for our country in a way I’ve never seen before.
Yeah, there are plenty of things to complain about(and I’m sure other Canadians in this thread have done so already), but after years of butting heads with each other and being divided, we’re standing together as Canadians, which is pretty great.
There’s a camaraderie in the air.
But at the same time, there’s a profound sadness. Our best bud; who just so happens to have the most terrifying military in the history of humanity, is threatening our economic security and sovereignty, and many of us have made the difficult decision that we’ll defend our land to the death if we have to.
We also feel somewhat abandoned by our allies because the Europeans haven’t voiced any support for us. I get it. They have their own shit going on, but we helped them in two world wars, wars which were an océan away from us. Even just a word of support from their leaders would be cool. Like, “Hey, america, Canada’s our buddy. Stop threatening their sovereignty, eh?”
Vive le Canada.

Africa is becoming more independent (which i love)
Nigeria just opened 20 Billion Oil refinery that is fucking over the EU
multiple African countries are partnering with Russia and China for Defense and infrastructure, and refusing Western Aid and pushed out foreign forces.
Africa has started building its own EV’s.
Canada is now looking at China as a more reliable trading partner then the US

China is selling off US debt, another thing that will hurt the US alot
France no longer has control of African resources, which is hurting the French economy

I believe china is watching how the west reacts to ukraine and gaza.
Europe is most likely arming up in anticipation of an isolated US; which historically is never a good thing.
Many economies are looking to migrate to new markets and decrease their north american footprint. Which might stimulate some economic recession until the markets migrate.
Probably not a lot has changed in Kazakhstan
Edit: you will probably start seeing some global legislation reigning in social media/cookies/data usage since it can be used as a weapon more powerful than a nuclear bomb. That would be the hope.
