I love music with all my life. It’s the only thing that gets me going. I’m even takin theory classes to learn how music works, I’m studying music. Been playing instruments and music for almost 12 years.
But that’s besides the point. I recently found multiple songs that made me feel emotions I felt before but It reacted in such a way I’ve never experienced. I had chills go up my spine, my hands shook from the amount of pleasure I was hearing in the harmonies, chords, etc. I even cried cuz the feeling was so surreal. I closed my eyes and for what it felt like 50 seconds I was in a whole other place. It’s hard to explain but the feeling was something so strong I almost don’t wanna feel it again but I do. I never ever felt this before
I’m probably crazy explain this but I need to know if anyone else felt this

Yes, this is the transcendent capacity of art. It takes you beyond yourself into territory new. I love art with all my life too.
There’s a simple figure in this Aphex Twin song The Tuss - “Shiz Ko E” that gets me every time. It’s one of his squelchy odd ones and then he just drops the beauty on you for a goddamn second. It takes me over. His music is like that, full of contrast, harshness and beauty side-by-side, sometimes at the same time.
What are you listening to?
UslessPerson • 5 points • 2020-12-04
The song that I was listening to was a new song form Shawn Mendes. In his song called “Dream” the harmonies in the notes “D4, F#4, A4, D5” and at the D5 gave me chills. I think it’s cuz the grouping it’s noted in and the fullness. I’m a sucker for big harmonious songs.
And “teach me how to love” towards the ending with the choir people singing along with Shawn
Jdmcdona • 7 points • 2020-12-04
Shawn Mendes isn’t exactly Aphex Twin, but that’s the beauty isn’t it.
UslessPerson • 1 points • 2020-12-04
Hahah no it’s not. Were you asking me what music I listen to from Aphex Twin?
[deleted] • 25 points • 2020-12-04
Yes. Many times. Music is POWERFUL. One of the more memorable times this happened was the first time I listened to Shine on You Crazy Diamond in it’s entirety. I remember after the first build up when the drums come in, I literally had waves of pleasure pulsing through my body. I’d like to ask, what song were you listening to that got this reaction out of you?
dirg3music • 4 points • 2020-12-04
I think it’s the part IX bluesy-funk breakdown that gets me every time. The call and response between the bass and Richard Wright’s synths is so on point.

God speed and white Ferrari.
Freaking beautiful night time high way drive music. (Incredibly specific but I can’t be the only one)
Weedsmoker4hunnid20 • 2 points • 2020-12-05
White Ferrari is “the” song for me. Like no other song can do what that song does for me. It’s been that way since I first heard it. I used to listen to it nearly every night with headphones on before going to sleep just to feel complete euphoria and end the night on a good note. I recently tried listening to it on acid and started crying and every emotion just kinda hit me at once in full force. The ending of it specifically… fuck

Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll does it for me. Just close your eyes and listen to the whole thing. It’s intense and emotional.

Yes. I remember it distinctly. I was around twelve years old, and was walking to my local library listening to my old discman, and Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix came on. When it got to the guitar solo, I was moved to literal tears because of how beautiful it was.

You are definitely not alone here. I crawl through catalogues of music finding those songs that send chills.

First time I heard Dogs by Pink Floyd I cried. First time I listened to College Dropout I cried. The Blacker The Berry made me feel absolute shock with the twist at the end there’s definitely more than just that but those are what comes to the top of my head. It’s not weird or crazy that’s just what happens when the music moves you enough!
[deleted] • 2 points • 2020-12-04

The intro to AJR’s “Don’t Throw Out My Legos” always gets me. It’s gonna sound cheesy but the best way I could put it is it sounds like someone’s life flashing before their eyes and when the drums kick in I always get at least a little teary eyed

It seems listening to good classical music is the only thing that’s made me cry (in a good way) in the last few decades. I love many types of music BTW.
UslessPerson • 2 points • 2020-12-04
Same here I love different types of music!! I’m open to all genres. One classical song I heard was so..ugh idk how to explain it but I loved it so much.
InfamousBatyote • 2 points • 2020-12-04
Absolutely. The most recent couple of songs that did it for me were Dawn Chorus by Thom Yorke and The Ascension by Sufjan Stevens. There’s a real desperate spirituality to both of those songs that leaps out of the speakers.
[deleted] • 2 points • 2020-12-04
I used to feel like that a lot. When I was like 16-18 I’d listen to music every night for hours at loud volumes through headphones. I noticed after getting into a certain state about 25 minutes into listening it was just like pure pleasure while the songs were on. I listened to a lot of loud guitary noise rock and dreamy stuff. Eventually I started taking drugs to enhance this. For a while that was the most beautiful thing I can imagine. Then I went too far and never came back. Music is much less physically pleasing now. Every once in a while it will hit me but it’s much different. Now a passionate line or incredible phrasing brings out an intensity in me.
MusicianFoodie • 2 points • 2020-12-04
I cried after listening to James Blake’s “Never Learnt to Share” for the first time back in 2013. It fucked me uppp
wingleton • 2 points • 2020-12-04
1000%. I’ve performed live and even played things I had no idea I knew how to do – even things that I can’t repeat later on command if I wanted to. It’s almost as I trascend and the spirit of music takes over my body when I allow it (no overthinking, just enjoying the ride). Crazy sounding I know but it’s the closest thing to a “religious” experience I’ve ever had, and it’s beautiful to give yourself over to it.
Other times even when just jamming out at home, there is always a chord or melody that just makes me melt or feel almost high with joy or emotion. When I’m having anxiety I find it can really calm me down to play my piano, or listen to artists I like.
I think this is a strong reason why movies use music the way they do – to punctuate emotions, to enhance meaning. A scary scene is so much scarier with tense music, as a happy or melancholic scene can feel so much more uplifting or tear-jerking with the right music. It just carries so much emotional power, it’s like a drug haha…
Fuck I love music! :)
spilledmilkinmind • 2 points • 2020-12-05
“enhance meaning” is not one I’ve heard before, but I feel that so heavy
wingleton • 2 points • 2020-12-05
Yeah I once saw this video illustrating the power of music set to film. They showed a balloon floating away and then a shot of a man looking up, expressionless. Without music it felt kind of meaningless - you assume it could be the man’s balloon but also - whatever, who cares? The man didn’t seem to care either way.
Then the next example was the same footage but set to sad wistful music - and though his face lacked expression, you felt some pain for him, you understood the loss. Next example, same clips but with quirky upbeat music - you didn’t feel pain, you felt humor - changed the meaning entirely of how the man may have felt, like he may have let the balloon go out of joy. And so on like this. It’s pretty cool how music can enhance or create meaning where there is none or where it’s not strong enough on its own!
[deleted] • 2 points • 2020-12-04
Hell yeah, part of the reason why I got heavy into EDM Trap scene.
Most recently I watched Cowboy Bebop, at the end of Jupiter Jazz pt 2 they play this song perfectly with the show and it fucked me up on a different level. Song is called space lion.

It’s called “Frisson”
Check out The Beach Boys “God Only Knows.” Prepare to cry a little. It’s not a sad song, but it’s powerful, especially with the harmonies and counterpoint.
Jayce2K • 2 points • 2020-12-04
I have a song in my head, lyrics, arrangement, melody, structure the whole nine yards but I’ll never be able to create what I’m hearing. It’s a sad song and makes me welt up every time I play the song in my head. Does anyone else have a song they want to make but just can’t do it justice when it comes to making it?
UslessPerson • 2 points • 2020-12-05
I feel the same way. I’ll have a whole song set up in my head with everything but I know that in some way it won’t get made. Because of some dumb reason. But that’s why I pushed myself and ended up making it! It was very satisfying
CorruptionIMC • 2 points • 2020-12-04
Of course. I think you’d be hard pressed to find a non-sociopathic conscious being who hasn’t felt that at some point. Even my macaw (parrot) had favorite songs that would get him immensely excited to hear, like it just made his whole day.
For me, the most recent was Lights Out by Zeds Dead, which is sort of funny because I’m not huge on electronic music. Been going through this weird growth phase where I’m kind of figuring out who I am and what I want out of life again, and that song has this hard undertone of ambiguity. It’s almost sad but hopeful, happy but bittersweet, it’s really hard for me to nail down just what it is. That resonates with me like hell right now with this odd state I’ve been in, hits me like a brick every time I listen to it.

Laingly86 • 2 points • 2020-12-04
I’ve only had this happen once in my life, not as intense as your experience, but on a similar level. The song was Jóga by Bjórk. I felt so moved on an unexplainable level, it was crazy. Was probably the 100th time I’d heard that song, but something happened that day, and the reaction still stays with me today. So, yes it happens to others, but probably a good thing it doesn’t happen often. We would be all a constant blubbering mess!
UslessPerson • 1 points • 2020-12-05
Yeha I don’t wanna be melting in public when my favorite song comes on 🤣but it was a great feeling for just one time. Makes me realize how much music impacts me on the daily and how I can take it for granted. Your lucky you feel the same reaction just like when you heard it the first time.
Dr3d_Recs • 2 points • 2020-12-05
For the most part, songs just really give me some kind of energy. They either pump me up, bring me joy, mellow me out, or just make me groove.
Only a few songs have really ever “moved me emotionally,” but the only two I can think of at the moment are the West World Opening Theme, and Zedd - One Strange Rock.
[deleted] • 2 points • 2020-12-05
